Species Account:

Costasiella sp. 3 was photographed and collected by Atsushi Ono from a sandy bottom on a green alga, Avrainvillea erecta, in the waters off Aka Island, one of a series of islands in the Kerama Islands Group, which are located 30 ~ 40 kilometers west of the Okinawa capitol, Naha. The above image is used with Atsushi's kind permission. Atsushi reports (pers. comm.) seeing only two individuals but collecting only the above single specimen (the second uncollected individual was also 5mm). I've added a second page with an additional image of the same individual, also kindly furnished by Atsushi.

Previously I've featured several species of Costasiella on these pages and as of the current date, there are several described and undescribed species of Costasiella, reported from Okinawan waters (Ono, 2004). The featured animals are as follows:

  • C. kuroshimae
  • C. paweli
  • C. usagi
  • C. vegae
  • C. sp. 1
  • C. sp. 2
  • C. sp. 3 (the above featured animal)
